Transmission Line Animations

These are animations of a voltage wave traveling along a lossless transmission line with the stated termination


Short Termination (ZL = 0 Ω)



Notice that, for a short circuit termination, all of the voltage wave is reflected, with a phase shift of 180º   (Γ = -1).  Also note that, at the location of the short (on the far right), the voltage is always zero.


Open Termination (ZL = ∞)


Notice that, for an open circuit termination, all of the voltage wave is reflected, with a phase shift of 0º   (Γ = 1).  Also note that, at the location of the short (on the far right), the voltage maximum is twice the magnitude of the incoming wave.


Matched Load Termination (ZL = Zo)


Notice that, for a matched load termination, none of the voltage wave is reflected, and all the power coming down the line is passed to the load.
